Played Le Mookie this past week. Don't know how I awoke with enough resolve to reload and start to play again, but I did enjoy the brief foray. Will definitely be treating it like a passtime or occasional hobby, unlike the default home for all my pent up anxieties whilest I was between gigs. Had zero feel for the game, so stuck to basics and ended up jamming AJo into AQ to end the night. Was sort of an unnecessary stand, but I'd been pretty bored with my cards for the hour leading up to it, and had actually forgotten how much of poker is folding. Mmmmph.
So I have budgeted some time and some dollars a month to goof off with. And I have only one dubious poker goal this year - win the Mookie. Not sweating BBT4 [although I think it's very cool FT is running it again - gj Al et al.] I will be in Vegas in June for WSOP - likely when some of you will be down there too so hopefully my bloggin bonafides will entitle me to a few introductions etc.
What else? Not so much. Long work weeks but weekends totally off. Workouts going well - although I did injure myself for the first time in 5 months in the gym. Low back soreness, likely from deadlifting. We've been working around it and the gains continue, but sitting here typing I'm sore... guess it was inevitable. 37 y/o can only pretend to be 27 for so long without paying the interest.
OTW life goes on, celebrated 10 years of being married recently, and all three kids have cylced birthdays so they run 357 now. As I watch the news, I know my particular gig is going to get a massive haircut soon from a guy I actually respect, but since there isn't much I can do about it, I'm mostly going about my business as usual. These are days of rumble on the tracks. Which way the train is coming or going is yet to be determined. ie. Who else liked Citi at a buck? Hard to miss on that one I hope.
Laytah.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
OK, I tried that title from memory, without the use of google, my phone, or anything else including my set of originals. I will check later to see how I fared, but my guess is close but perhaps not perfect.
same can be said of the movie I watched this afternoon. strange that the Creator [maestro that he is] took such a hard line on snyder's liberties. I thought the film was very, very true to the concepts, pulled no political punches and still managed to transcend its roots and succeed as a film. I saw it with a good friend of mine from south buffalo who had never heard of the legendary tome and his words on exiting with me from our private screening [yup go a few weeks after release on a friday afternoon and get the entire theatre to yourself - very posh] summed it up well:
That was wild. (chuckling) Really. Wild.
Watchmen works as a film. I am mystified by the mixed reviews, it's much better than the majority of superhero films because it never notices it is one. I could have done with less flourescent blue dong and more silk spectre makin' with the nastiness, but oh well.
One more thought for any of you comic book lovers out there. Wil Wheaton posted about the movie when he was part of a TV show built around an early screening and shared his thoughts. I was surprised that as an artist, he spent almost no time delving into Moore's take on the intellectual property issues that resulted in the author taking his name off the project in protest. I am paraphrasing, but the impression I got was - "Well I wanted to enjoy this movie, and it doesn't make a difference to Moore what I think about it, so it's irrelevant and not worth getting into here." Now I like WW a lot, and have read his stuff regularly for years, but that take fell a little short.
On a somewhat related personal note that sheds light on my personal and physical development plan lately - that was the first movie I've ever seen where I bought a treat to enjoy the flick [peanut m et m's] and didn't finish them by movies end. i only ate about ten i think. didn't want the rest so i didn't eat them. i am down 30 pounds, 11% body fat and up about 5 pounds of muscle over the last four to five months. i have a fairly large chunk of change hinging on me getting back to 6 pack form by august, but if i keep this up i should be ok.
yes, yes i am sore all the time from the early morning torture sessions. and yes, i have heard of entropy and the inevitability of death.
i'm just running a hedge is all.
T.O. in the 'Flo. Please God let Lee Evans have a career year. The dude is the ultimate teammate, and a hell of a cool guy. I watched the superbowl at a friend's house, and he was there too - very easygoing, no attitude, no entourage and no drama kind of guy. Took all my reserve not to act like an idiot. So, despite knowing a hell of a lot better, now I'm looking forward once again to watching my Bills take the field. Save me Jebus.

in praise of new things.
First post from the Storm. 3G is cool. Amazed that many of my friends hate the storm. She may not be all that smart but she looks great and plays reasonably nicely. That's all you can ask from some girls.
Ironically, the less certain I am anyone is actually reading, the more interest I've had in posting
People are strange.

It is, in fact, a small world. After all.
Back from Disney.
Never stay at the Polynesian. Or however the fuck you spell that. Never do it. I would list the reasons but I have a million emails and notes to get to so I will keep this PSA short.
Never stay at the Poly.
Still the vacation gets a 9/10, so that says a lot about my three kids, my girl and the Imagineers. I do loves me some Epcot [why, btw, is Epcot not entirely capitalized, despite being an acronym?]. We went to the Leave a Legacy section in front of the golfball and found where U and I spent a precious $40 of residency dough getting a picture taken - almost 9 years to the date. She looks better now than she did then. I must be just enough of a pokah blogger that I qualified for the marrying up clause. Despite about four months of very hard work in gym and at the fridge, I definitely looked better back in the day. Wait till next year, I guess.
May put a photo or two up but working from the Mrs.' computer since Vista killed my WiFi. Could any other company in the history of the universe[s?] get away with this level of shit?
Bit the bullet and bought a Blackberry Storm today. Got a Curve for my wife tossed in for free. Well as free as things get at the Verizon store, where every paragraph of conversation leads you down the road to spending dumbly on things you only marginally need and were previously unaware of. To the slicksters go the spoils.

The Optimist.
In Toronto for another 29 hour runup to see the folks. I love the drive in. I pass through the skyline and feel briefly, unapologetically nostalgic for the me I had planned - more carefree, less responsible, practicing downtown T.O., living in one of those overpriced but breathtaking shoeboxes in the stratosphere. Then the cabin noise from the Odyssey kicks in and I continue on the way to Ithaca. Or is it Troy? Frame of reference as key, indeed.
No complaints today: the sky is open and I've had breakfast [four hardboiled eggwhites and black coffee - who am I?] with the most optimistic guy I've ever known. Dad announced to me last night that at the age of 70 and still as keen as the business end of the blade, he's retiring from the group practice he's known for 27 years. He'll open an office closer to home to make life easier and work half days from now on. Good on him. I'm off to help scout the locations and talk rentals.
Beginnings when others think endings. I remain clearly aware of how lucky I was to end up this guy's son. The birthright was the expectation of good things, the acceptance of their occasional absences, and the acute awareness of them when they arrive.
